Why I Decided to Retell My Hearing Loss Story with How I Hear: A Podcast Interview

Thirteen years ago, my memoir Confessions of a Lip Reading Mom hit the bookshelves. It detailed the emotional and mental health impact of having hearing loss while raising my three children, during the first six years after diagnosis. In the latest episode of the Deafinitely Talking podcast, I speak with Dr. Anne McIntosh, president of Safe ‘N’ Clear, Inc. about the decision to update and re-release my 2013 memoir in the updated 2026 version of How I Hear: Confessions of a Lip Reading Mom.

In How I Hear, I recount my journey with progressive hearing loss, diagnosed 25 years ago when I was age 27 and shortly after the birth of my first child. The unexpected news thrusted my life of constant adjustment as familiar sounds—doorbells, smoke alarms, and my babies’ cries—begin to fade. While raising three healthy children, I wrestled with fear and uncertainty, yet found determination strengthening alongside my family.

Through the challenges of looming deafness, I intend for my updated book to be a heartfelt story of resilience and grace. I also add new details about my decision to return back to college in my 40s and to have cochlear implant surgery in my 50s.
