World Hearing Day is March 3: Let’s Change Mindsets

March 3 is World Hearing Day and is organized annually by the World Health Organization. This year’s theme that is illustrated below in the vibrant purple visual of a person’s side profile with a red orb radiating from the ear is Changing mindsets: Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all!

As a person who has lived with progressive bilateral hearing loss for more than two decades, I include the following strategies to change mindsets about healthy hearing habits and hearing loss:

-Have your hearing tested annually as part of your overall health care. Encourage your loved ones to do the same.

-Learn more about hearing technology, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and assistive devices. The technology is changing rapidly and now offers more accessibility features than when I first began wearing hearing aids 20 years ago.

-If you have residual hearing, protect it. Turn the volume down when listening to music through earbuds. Wear ear protection in noisy environments. This includes chores, such as vacuuming and using loud lawn equipment.
